Do Young People Care About the Church? | re:Brand Live at Holston AC

At our recent Holston Annual Conference, we had the privilege of hosting a live panel discussion centered on a critical topic: how our conference and churches can improve their ministry with young people. This engaging and eye-opening discussion, featuring young voices from within our community, highlighted both the challenges and opportunities we face in creating a more inclusive and relevant church for the next generation.

Critical Reflections on Current Structures

Our panelists did not shy away from addressing the shortcomings of our current church structures and norms. Here are some key criticisms that were brought to light:

1. Lack of Representation: Young voices are frequently underrepresented in decision-making processes within the church. This lack of inclusion leads to a disconnect between the church's actions and the needs and desires of its younger members.

2. Rigid Structures: The rigidity of church structures often stifles innovation and adaptation. Young people expressed frustration with the inflexibility they encounter when proposing new ideas or changes to existing practices.

Optimistic Vision for the Future

Despite these criticisms, the discussion was filled with hope and optimism for a better future. Our panelists shared several inspiring takeaways that can guide us towards more effective ministry with young people:

1. Foster Genuine Relationships: Building authentic relationships is key. Churches need to create spaces where young people feel truly valued and heard. This involves more than just token gestures; it requires a deep commitment to understanding and addressing their unique needs and perspectives.

2. Empower Young Leaders: Giving young people real leadership opportunities within the church can significantly enhance their engagement. By involving them in decision-making processes and providing platforms for their voices to be heard, we can create a more inclusive and dynamic community.

3. Flexible and Inclusive Structures: The church must become more flexible and inclusive in its structures. This means being open to change, encouraging creativity, and actively dismantling barriers that prevent young people from fully participating in church life.

4. Embrace Innovation: To remain relevant, the church must be willing to embrace new technologies and innovative practices. This includes utilizing social media, creating engaging digital content, and exploring new forms of worship that resonate with younger generations.

Call to Action

To inspire action and foster a more vibrant future for our church, here are some practical steps that individuals and congregations can take:

1. Develop Cross-Generational Relationships: The best way to learn how your ministry can be relevant to young person is to be in relationship with young people in your own life. Reach out with authenticity. Value the person, not just the demographic.

2. Conduct Listening Sessions: Organize regular listening sessions with young people in your community. Use these sessions to understand their concerns, ideas, and aspirations for the church.

3. Review and Revise Structures: Critically assess your church's structures and policies. Identify areas where changes can be made to be more inclusive and supportive of young people's involvement.

4. Encourage New  Leadership: Actively seek out and encourage young leaders within your congregation. Provide them with opportunities to lead projects, serve on committees, and contribute to the church's vision and direction.

By taking these steps, we can create a church environment that not only welcomes but actively involves and empowers young people. The insights from our Holston Annual Conference panel discussion remind us that while there are challenges to overcome, there is also immense potential for growth and transformation. Let's work together to build a church that reflects the vibrant, diverse, and dynamic body of Christ.
